We are delighted to welcome you to the Department of Quantity Surveying, established at the Kafanchan Campus as part of the university’s second phase of development. At KASU, we offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programs that are designed to provide you with a solid foundation in the field of Quantity Surveying.
Our department holds special significance within Kaduna State, a region known for its rich history in the profession. Notably, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, located in our state, was the first institution in West Africa to offer a degree in Quantity Surveying in 1971. We are proud to continue the legacy of great Quantity Surveyors from the region, such as Dr. Shehu Lawal Giwa, Dr. Baba Usman, and many others, whose contributions have left a lasting mark on the profession.
Read MoreThe Department of Quantity Surveying at Kaduna State University, Kafanchan Campus, was established in 2012. Dr. Yakubu Gimson Musa Haddary was the first Head of Department (HOD), followed by Dr. Yakubu Michael Zaki (2013-2018), Mrs. Sharon Tchad Jatau (Acting HOD until February 2019), Mr. James David Jatau (Acting HOD), and Dr. Buba Simon-Peter Gumgaro, who became HOD in 2020. Dr. Zaki resumed leadership in 2023, and Dr. Gumgaro reassumed the role in March 2024.
The program was designed to support the state’s and nation’s industrialization and aligns with the National Universities Commission’s academic standards. Since its inception, the department has graduated six cohorts, with the seventh set to graduate in 2024. Currently, 400-level students have completed their SIWES training, gaining valuable industry experience.

The Department of Quantity Surveying conducts research in diverse areas, including cost management, life cycle costing, and BIM for cost control. It explores risk management in construction, sustainable practices, and construction contract management. The department focuses on procurement strategies, project performance, construction economics, and human resource management. It investigates innovations like AI, drones, and robotics in construction, along with delay analysis and health, safety, and environment (HSE) risks. Other research areas include construction financing, infrastructure development, digital transformation, construction law, facility management, housing, urban development, disaster risk reduction, and professional development in quantity surveying.
Kaduna State University fosters a research-driven culture through various scholarly platforms that promote intellectual engagement. The Department of Quantity Surveying actively participates in conferences and workshops to enhance knowledge. Notable conferences include the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) AGMs, International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) global forums, African Association of Quantity Surveyors (AAQS) meetings, Building Information Modeling (BIM) conferences, academic forums on sustainable construction, and industry development conferences. Workshops focus on risk management, contract administration, sustainable practices, emerging technologies like AI and IoT, and professional development. Additionally, the department hosts capacity-building workshops for academia and offers mentorship training for SIWES, fostering collaboration and growth in the field of Quantity Surveying.
