KASU Faculty of Education Organises Workshop to Enhance Teaching Excellence

The Faculty of Education, Kaduna State University (KASU), has organised a capacity-building workshop on effective teaching techniques and classroom management to strengthen the pedagogical skills of its academic staff.

The workshop, held as part of the Faculty’s commitment to aligning its academic activities with the University’s Strategic Plan, brought together lecturers from across the Faculty to explore contemporary teaching methods, effective lesson delivery, classroom management, and the effective utilisation of instructional resources.

Declaring the workshop open, the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Professor Isa Alhaji Usman, described the initiative as timely and essential to improving the quality of teaching within the Faculty. He noted that the quality of education in Nigeria depends significantly on the continuous professional development of educators and encouraged participants to adopt innovative, 21st-century teaching approaches in their classrooms.

Professor Isa Alhaji Usman also facilitated the first session on Teaching Techniques, stressing that effective teaching extends beyond classroom instruction. He highlighted the importance of lesson preparation, engaging introductions, reinforcement, effective questioning, illustrations, variation in teaching methods, and the logical presentation of lesson content. He encouraged lecturers to incorporate storytelling, practical examples, and appropriate instructional materials to enhance students’ understanding, engagement, and participation.

The second session was facilitated by the Acting Head of the Department of Educational Foundations, Dr. Zainab Yusuf, who delivered a presentation on Classroom Management. She emphasised strategies for creating a positive learning environment through effective classroom routines, learner engagement, positive discipline, and the recognition of positive behaviour. According to her, effective classroom management is fundamental to achieving meaningful learning outcomes.

Speaking on behalf of the organisers, workshop coordinators Dr. Bashir Mamman and Dr. Benjamin Tank explained that the training was organised in response to the need for continuous improvement in lecturers’ teaching competencies.

They noted that the Faculty recognised the importance of equipping lecturers with modern pedagogical skills, which informed the selection of workshop topics such as teaching techniques, classroom management, and other contemporary instructional practices. They expressed satisfaction with the level of participation and commended the resource persons for delivering insightful and practical presentations.

The coordinators also appreciated the Dean, Professor Isa Alhaji Usman, for his unwavering support in making the workshop a success. They further thanked members of staff for their active participation, commitment, and enthusiasm throughout the programme.

The workshop reaffirmed the Faculty of Education’s commitment to continuous professional development and its determination to equip lecturers with innovative teaching strategies that will enhance instructional delivery, improve classroom experiences, and contribute to the overall quality of education at Kaduna State University.
