Kaduna State University Library Raises Awareness on Drug Abuse Through Radio Programme.

In commemoration of the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (World Drug Day), observed annually on 26 June, the Community Service Department of Kaduna State University (KASU) Library organized a radio awareness programme on 29 June 2026 at KASU FM 98.5. The programme formed part of the Library’s community outreach initiatives aimed at educating students and members of the public on the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of promoting a drug-free society.

The programme, themed:. Drug Abuse Among Students: Protecting Our Health, Our Education, and Our Future, featured Mrs. Lami Gillian Daniel, Head of the Community Service Department, KASU Library, and Comrade Good Heart Archie Sheyin, author of A Letter to His Son and Patron and Founder of the KASU Drug-Free Club, as guest speakers.

In her presentation, Mrs. Daniel emphasized that the academic library is not only a centre for teaching, learning, and research, but also a platform for community education and public enlightenment. She explained that drugs are beneficial when used under professional medical supervision, but become harmful when misused. She highlighted the adverse effects of drug abuse on the brain, heart, liver, kidneys, and mental health, noting that substance abuse contributes to poor academic performance, addiction, violence, and reduced life expectancy. She urged students to make informed choices, utilize library resources, and seek professional counselling when necessary.

Comrade Good Heart Archie Sheyin identified peer pressure, curiosity, academic stress, family challenges, and misinformation as major causes of drug abuse among young people. He encouraged students to reject substance abuse, cultivate positive friendships, and serve as ambassadors of a drug-free campus. He also called on parents to provide proper guidance and serve as positive role models for their children.

The programme concluded with a call for collective action by students, parents, educators, and the wider community to combat drug abuse through awareness, education, counselling, and responsible lifestyle choices. The initiative reaffirmed the commitment of the KASU Library to community engagement and the promotion of healthy living through public enlightenment programmes.
