Bridging Theory and Practice: KASU Hosts Opening Ceremony of CIWES 2025, Equipping NDA Cadets with Essential GIS and Remote Sensing Skills

The opening ceremony of the Annual Cadet Industrial Work Experience Scheme (CIWES) took place at the GIS Lab of Kaduna State University (KASU) on 18th March 2025, with dignitaries and esteemed guests in attendance from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). Key figures included Dr. Dadan-Garba Aliyu (Head of Department), Dr. Umar Abubakar, Dr. Sylvanus Helda Bernard (Coordinator), Mal. Jabir Abubakar, and Mal. Ibrahim Abubakar.

Representing KASU at the event were Dr. Asma’u Mukhtar (Head of the Department of Geography and Sustainability Studies), Dr. Bonet A.R. (Facilitator), Dr. Salisu Ibrahim (Training Coordinator for KASU Cadet SIWES), Dr. Emmanuel E. Monday (Facilitator), Dr. Ariyo D.J. (Facilitator), and Dr. Umar Haira (Facilitator at KEPA). Also present were a team of dedicated facilitators, including Mr. Yarison Emmanuel, Mr. Goodheard Sheyin, Mrs. Joy Jakakad, Mr. Gidado Mohamed (GIS Technologist), Mr. Bilal Sani (GIS Technologist), Mrs. Fatima Saidu (GIS Technologist), Mr. Joshua Umaru Madaki, Mr. Baba Shunom, and Mr. Mohammed Balerabe Abdullahazir Garba.

The Vice-Chancellor of Kaduna State University, Prof. Ibrahim I. Musa, was ably represented by Dr. Asma’u Mukhtar, who delivered the opening remarks, welcoming all attendees to the event. In her address, she emphasized the significance of the Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) in preparing NDA students for the workforce. She highlighted the crucial role SIWES plays in bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical skills, equipping students for future professional challenges.

Dr. Asma’u Mukhtar also delivered an insightful lecture on remote sensing, explaining the concept of solar radiation and its impact on remote sensors. Her lecture covered the two main types of radiation—passive and active—and discussed the components of remote sensing systems, including sensor platforms and energy sources. She elaborated on the applications of remote sensing in areas such as vegetation and environmental monitoring, engaging the audience in a dynamic and interactive Q&A session.

Following Dr. Mukhtar’s lecture, Dr. Salisu Ibrahim, the Training Coordinator for KASU Cadet SIWES, took the stage to present a lecture on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This was followed by a practical demonstration, allowing participants to experience GIS technology firsthand. The event successfully blended theoretical knowledge with hands-on training, reinforcing the value of SIWES in shaping well-rounded professionals.

The ceremony provided a platform for rich academic exchange and practical insights, ensuring that NDA cadets are well-prepared for their future careers in the fields of Geography, Sustainability Studies, GIS, and remote sensing applications.
