Prof. Ntim Gyakari Esew Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Festschrift Launch on Democracy and Development in Africa

Kaduna State University’s Department of Political Science and International Relations hosted a grand event on Tuesday, 18th February 2025, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Prof. Ntim Gyakari Esew as a Professor of African Politics. The event also marked the official launch of a Festschrift in his honor, drawing esteemed academics, policymakers, and former students.

Themed “Democracy and Development in Africa: The Gap Between Theory and Praxis,” the occasion provided a platform for intellectual discourse while recognizing Prof. Esew’s remarkable contributions to academia.

In his remarks, Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa, Vice-Chancellor of Kaduna State University, represented by Prof. Sadiq Abdu, Provost, College of Postgraduate Studies reiterated KASU’s dedication to academic excellence and praised Prof. Esew’s impact on the field of political science. 

Prof. Danyaro Ali Yakasai, Chairman of the occasion, expressed his deep admiration for Prof. Esew, commending his dedication, humility, and mentorship. He also acknowledged the unwavering support of Prof. Esew’s wife, emphasizing the role of family in academic success.

Hon. Garba Muhammad Datti, a former House of Representatives member and one of Prof. Esew’s students at ABU Zaria in 2001, shared heartfelt memories of his academic journey. He described Prof. Esew as a mentor whose teachings shaped his understanding of politics and governance.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. David Moveh Omeiza from ABU Zaria, who presented a paper titled “The Decline of Democracy in Africa: An Overview.” He examined the historical and contemporary challenges of democratic governance in Africa, citing issues such as long-serving leaders, political instability, and Africa’s place in a shifting global order. He urged scholars to continue researching these evolving dynamics to better inform policy and governance.

A major highlight of the event was the unveiling of the Festschrift—a collection of essays honoring Prof. Esew’s contributions to political science. The book was officially launched by Dr. Muhammad Tafida, Head of the Political Science Department at ABU Zaria, and Prof. P.P. Izah, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at KASU.

The Festschrift was made available in both hard and soft copies, priced at 7,000 Naira and 5,000 Naira, respectively. Several dignitaries purchased copies, including Hon. Garba Muhammad Datti, who bought three, and the Vice Chancellor’s representative, who secured 10 copies for the university library.

Dr. Yakubu Haruna Ja’e, Head of the Political Science Department at KASU, described Prof. Esew as a pillar of mentorship and leadership. He also acknowledged the contributions of pioneering scholars who helped establish the department.

A touching moment during the event came from Prof. Esew’s grandchildren, who took the stage to express their gratitude and admiration for their grandfather’s academic and personal achievements.

In his vote of thanks, Prof. Ntim Gyakari Esew expressed deep appreciation to the university leadership, his colleagues, and all attendees for their support. He reflected on the journey of his career, emphasizing humility, perseverance, and continuous learning. Quoting the philosopher Chichell, he noted that this celebration was not an endpoint but the beginning of another phase in his academic contributions. The event concluded with a renewed commitment to scholarly engagement and the advancement of democracy and development in Africa.

The celebration of Prof. Esew’s decade-long academic journey not only honored his achievements but also reinforced the critical discourse on democracy and development in Africa.
