The 14th National Conference of the Medical Library Association of Nigeria (MLA-N) commenced at Kaduna State University on Tuesday, 8th October 2024, gathering notable professionals and stakeholders in the medical library sector. The conference aimed to address the evolving roles of medical librarians and the integration of technology in library services.



The Chairman of MLA-NG, Dr. (Mrs.) Violet E. Ikolo highlighted the importance of utilizing AI in medical library services, mentioning that over 100 papers would be presented during the conference. She also expressed appreciation for the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and their efforts.
The Vice-Chancellor, Kaduna State University, Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa delivered the opening remarks. He posed engaging questions regarding the passion and commitment of library staff, stressing the importance of intentionality in their roles. He expressed pride in hosting the conference, detailing the university’s strategic framework aimed at improving library services over the next 50 years.



He underscored the importance of collaboration and partnership, presenting the university library as a unique resource in Africa that supports clinical services. Prof. Musa commended the library staff and noted the library’s commitment to innovative services beyond traditional resources.
The NLA Vice President and keynote speaker, Dr. Lawal Umar, addressed the conference under the theme “Reimagining Medical Library Services in the 21st Century.” He discussed the current identity crisis in librarianship and stressed the importance of relevance in the profession. Key points from his presentation included:



The necessity for librarians to adapt to digital content creation, consumer information services, and the integration of technologies such as AI and cloud computing.
The imperative for medical libraries to evolve from traditional practices towards embracing industrial innovations, including data analysis and open science.
The role of medical librarians in promoting quality services and overcoming challenges faced in the field.
Dr. Umar concluded by advocating for a transformative approach to medical librarianship that focuses on survival, growth, and development.



The 14th MLA-N conference provided a platform for insightful discussions on the future of medical library services, buttressing the critical role of technology and innovation. The LOC and the university’s administration were commended for their efforts in organizing a successful conference. As the profession navigates through challenges, the call for relevance and adaptability remains crucial in shaping the future of medical librarianship.
