In a proactive initiative against drug abuse, third-year MBBS students at KASU launched a spirited campaign on Monday, 1st July 2024 aimed at raising awareness about the detrimental effects of drug and alcohol abuse on neurological health. The campaign, spearheaded by students following a comprehensive Medical Biochemistry lecture by their lecturer, Dr. Oghenetega Oweh, focuses on educating the university community about the profound impact of substances on neurotransmitters and their subsequent effects on nerve function.
During the lecture, students delved into the intricate biochemical mechanisms through which drugs and alcohol disrupt neurotransmitter pathways, leading to a cascade of neurological disorders. Armed with this knowledge, the students resolved to extend their learning beyond the classroom, embarking on a mission to inform and dissuade members of the university community from falling prey to substance abuse.
The campaign featured a series of educational workshops, poster displays, and interactive sessions designed to engage students and staff alike. Topics covered include the physiological effects of various substances, the development of addiction, and strategies for prevention and intervention.
In addition to educational efforts, the campaign also includes advocacy for support services and resources for individuals struggling with substance abuse issues. Collaborating with university health services, counseling centers, and student organizations, the students aim to foster a supportive network that encourages help-seeking behavior and promotes recovery.
As the campaign gains momentum across campus, students hope to inspire lasting change in attitudes towards substance abuse. Through their dedication and commitment, these future medical professionals are not only leading by example but also laying the groundwork for a healthier future within their university community.
