Experts Advocate Responsible Antibiotic Use at KASU AMR Workshop 2026.

Antimicrobial resistance club Kaduna State University in collaboration with Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria young pharmacist group organised an AMR Workshop 2026 on a theme Antimicrobial stewardship and rational drug use.
The workshop was held on the 29th June, 2026 at 500 Seater pharmacy building of Kaduna State University.
In her presentation Dr. Basira Kankia Lawal associate prof. Head of Department, Clinical pharmacy and pharmacy management Kaduna State University explained how one get infectious diseases and how they are been care after the patient is been diagnosed.
She said the infection diseases of thesame kind differs in treatment based on how the bacteria grown in the patient.
She said AMR is something to care about noting that 1.27 million deaths directly attributabale to AMR every year. 10 million projected annually deaths by 2050 if no action is taken. Also nearly 5 million deaths associated with AMR annually, more so 100 Percent healthcare professionals have a role to play.


She said that AMR really matter to us because of its widespread self medication with antibiotics, inappropriate prescribing and dispensing practices, limited access to microbiology and susceptibility testing, inadequate infection prevention and control measures,use of dantimicfobials in livestock and agriculture, and limited public awareness about antibiotic resistance.
She further made mention the learning objectives which include explaining the concept and global impact of antimicrobial resistance, describe the principal operational drug use, discuss the goals and core component of antimicrobials stewardship,explain the pharmacist role in promoting responsible antimicrobial use and apply microbial stewardship principles to clinical scenarious.
On the chain of AMR, she said rational drug use stewardship, pharmacist,clinical cases and actions are the things to put into consideration.
She added that AMR happened when bacteria,parasite,viruses and fungi become resistant to antimicrobial medicines that are used to treat the infections they cause. Also as a result of AMR antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines become ineffective and infections increasingly difficult or even impossible to treat.
She move to States the WHO global action plan on antimicrobial resistance in which She stated that WHO global action plan was adopted in 2015 which provide international framework for countries to develop their own national action plans, emphasizes coordinated actions across human health, animal health,agriculture and environment itthrough a one health approach.
In Nigeria’s national action plan on the antimicrobial resistance (2024-2028) are to improve awareness and education strengthen surveillance and research,reduce the incident of infection,optimise the use of antimicrobials and strengthen governance and sustainable investment.


She urged all pharmacist to follow guidelines of profession when dispensing drugs presented to them by patients, she said they should play their role in making sure that the appropriate drugs are given even if the patient came with specification of medication. Dr. Basira said antimicrobial resistance is a concern to everyone,every one has role to play in raising awareness on drug abuse.
In his presentation Dr. Adamu Muhammad Bashir of medical sciences Kaduna State University Called on pharmaceutical personnel and students to always translate the complex terminologies of the pharmaceuticals into a societal level, he added that they should spearhead the one health approach frame work that recognises the interconnectedness of humans,animal, and our shared environment.
He said one other way that students can advocate the antimicrobial resistance is through driving policy and Institutional Change, student’s led organisations, students advocate for antimicrobial within their own Universitise, ensuring that comprehensive antimicrobial stewardship,the symbolic effort to educate and guide providers to prescribe antimicrobial correctly,and AMR should be deeply integrated into clinical training rather than treated as an elective afterthought.
In her good will message the registrar of Kaduna State University Barrister Samira Balarabe commended the organisers of this workshop saying it came at the right time of its need considering how people are using in prescribed drugs and also looking at its effect of the body. She urged general advocacy for antimicrobial resistance in our society and Nigeria at large.
Award of excellence and appreciation was issued to some personalities for their efforts in advocating for antimicrobial resistance.
