KASU Equips Staff for Career Advancement Through Pre-Promotion Sensitisation Programme

The Kaduna State University (KASU) recently organized a sensitisation and pre-promotion examination lecture aimed at preparing staff members due for promotion as well as newly employed personnel for the university’s promotion exercise and administrative responsibilities.

The Deputy Registrar, Hajiya Sadiya Umar, welcomed participants and outlined the objectives of the orientation programme. She emphasized the importance of understanding the ethics and values of the civil service, noting that professionalism, integrity, and dedication remain essential qualities for career progression. She wished all staff members preparing for promotion success in the forthcoming examination.

Delivering a presentation on the laws governing the university, Abdulmutalab Abubakar, Esq., highlighted the various legal provisions, statutes, and regulations that guide the operations of the institution. He stressed the importance of institutional knowledge, particularly for newly recruited staff, and encouraged participants to familiarize themselves with the university’s legal framework to enhance effective service delivery.

The session on Conditions of Service and the Establishment of the University was jointly facilitated by Mrs. Amina Abutu, Deputy Registrar, and Mallam Shehu Tsoho, Deputy Provost, Postgraduate Studies. Mallam Tsoho discussed strategic reforms being introduced by the Registrar’s Department and explained the two categories of promotion within the university system. He underscored the need for staff to understand the procedures and requirements associated with career advancement.

In her presentation, Mrs. Abutu highlighted key provisions of the Staff Conditions of Service, which addresses staff cadre structures, appointments, promotions, and retirement procedures. She emphasized that promotion within the university is based on merit, competence, and adherence to established guidelines.
Speaking further, Hajiya Sadiya Umar encouraged staff preparing for the promotion examination to remain calm and confident, noting that most examination questions are drawn from practical aspects of their daily responsibilities. She also, illumined the university’s core principles and the critical role of administrative staff in achieving institutional goals. Additionally, she encouraged teamwork, punctuality, continuous professional development, and the acquisition of additional qualifications to enhance career growth.

Another presentation was delivered by Mr. Lucky Bala Kantoma, Deputy Registrar, who provided detailed insights into the university’s promotion system, retirement processes, and appointment procedures. He advised staff members to obtain and study the relevant statutory documents to better understand career progression requirements and institutional regulations. He concluded by wishing all candidates success in the promotion examination.

Representing the Bursar, Hajiya Hauwa Dalhat, Mrs. Victoria Ishaya Mairafi delivered a lecture on financial regulations and accountability within the university system. She emphasized the importance of financial literacy among staff and outlined the regulatory bodies responsible for overseeing financial management. According to her, understanding financial regulations is essential for ensuring compliance and safeguarding staff from administrative and financial infractions.

In her closing remarks, Hajiya Samira Balarabe, Esq., Registrar of Kaduna State University, provided a general overview of the promotion examination process. She encouraged participants to approach the examination with confidence, maintain a positive mindset, and remain focused on their career development goals. The Registrar advised staff to familiarize themselves with key aspects of the university, including its research centres, colleges, faculties, departments, provosts, deans, and heads of departments. She also highlighted the annual salary increment structure and recent salary adjustments, emphasizing the university’s commitment to staff welfare and development.
