College of Computing, Engineering, and Sciences Holds Orientation for New Students

The College of Computing, Engineering, and Sciences on Tuesday, 3rd June 2025, organized an orientation program for its newly admitted students to formally welcome them into the academic community and prepare them for their academic journey.

In his opening remarks, the Provost of the College, Prof. Abubakar S. Magaji, welcomed the new students and encouraged them to seek mentorship from the academic staff. He emphasized that the orientation was designed to equip them with the necessary tools and guidance as they begin their studies.

Delivering a presentation, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Muhammad Dauda, congratulated the students on their successful admission, describing them as privileged pioneers—being the first cohort to receive an orientation in the college. He urged them to strive for excellence and set a high standard as the inaugural students of the faculty.

While discussing career opportunities in computing, engineering, and the sciences, Prof. Dauda advised the students to consider taking Biology as an elective, in addition to their core courses. He also encouraged them to leverage artificial intelligence tools to aid their studies, avoid involvement in cultism, and always abide by the university’s rules and regulations.

Speaking on student conduct, the Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, Dr. M.K. Dauda, advised the students to regularly consult the university’s student handbook in order to familiarize themselves with institutional policies. He emphasized the importance of mutual respect—among themselves, towards their colleagues, and toward their lecturers—and encouraged them to remain attentive in class.

In his presentation on examination ethics and regulations, Dr. Yakubu Aliyu Tanko advised students to maintain at least 75% class attendance to enhance their continuous assessment scores. He highlighted the importance of punctuality during examinations and stressed the need for students to be aware of their continuous assessment marks to help them set targets for their exams.

Dr. Tanko also warned against examination misconduct. He cautioned students not to enter examination halls with unauthorized materials such as mobile phones or paper chits and discouraged impersonation, stressing that Kaduna State University (KASU) has a zero-tolerance policy for exam malpractice.

During the event, students were also taught how to calculate their Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and Grade Point Average (GPA), equipping them with essential academic skills for tracking their performance throughout their studies.
