The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences recently organized an orientation programme for newly admitted students to familiarize them with the academic environment and institutional expectations.
The programme, which also included returning students, was designed to introduce the students to the policies, support structures, and opportunities available within the College.

In her address, the College Administrator, Hauwa’u E. Yusuf, warmly welcomed the new students and congratulated them on gaining admission into the College. She reminded them that the primary reason for their presence at the University is to pursue academic excellence and encouraged them to remain focused on their studies.

Prof. Yusuf emphasized that the College has several functional departments and units in place to support students throughout their academic journey. These include the Student Affairs Unit, the University Clinic, and the Security Unit, all of which are available to assist students whenever the need arises.
She further explained the important role of Level Coordinators, noting that they should be the first point of contact for students facing challenges related to course registration, portal issues, and other academic concerns.
The Administrator also cautioned students against engaging in drug abuse or the use of illicit substances, stressing that such behavior will not be tolerated within the University community. She advised students to avoid staying out late in town for unnecessary reasons, particularly in light of the prevailing security challenges in the country.
In addition, Prof. Yusuf discouraged students from resorting to social media to criticize the University without first exploring the proper channels of communication available for addressing grievances. She also warned against any form of unauthorized student demonstrations or protests that could disrupt peace on campus.

She concluded by reminding the students that their time at the University would test not only their academic abilities but also their character, urging them to be responsible and disciplined members of the academic community. Prof. Yusuf also assured the students of the Management’s commitment to ensuring fairness and the well-being of all students.
The session also featured an interactive segment during which students asked questions and received clarifications from the College management.
Also speaking at the programme, the Deputy Dean of Student Affairs, Mercy Richard, reinforced the Administrator’s message and highlighted the critical role of the Student Affairs Unit. She informed the students that the Unit should serve as their first point of call whenever they encounter general challenges on campus.
Mrs. Richard noted that the Unit is staffed with experienced personnel who are available to guide and support students throughout their academic programmes.
She further urged the students to strictly adhere to the University’s rules and regulations in order to ensure a peaceful and productive academic environment.
The students expressed appreciation for the orientation programme and the opportunity to interact directly with the College Management, describing the session as informative and helpful as they begin their academic journey.
