Kaduna State University (KASU) on Tuesday, 9th December 2025, held its 14th Inaugural Lecture at the 1000-Seater Auditorium, with a strong emphasis on the role of geophysics in resource discovery, environmental management, and sustainable development.

The lecture, titled “From the Earth’s Surface to the Inner Core; From Ohm’s Law to Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation: Geophysics Providing Solutions for Resource Discovery and Sustainable Development,” was delivered by Prof. Cyril Gwazah Afuwaz, a renowned scholar in Applied Geophysics and Deputy Provost at the College of Computing, Engineering and Sciences, KASU.

The event, organised by the University’s Committee on Inaugural Lecture, Seminar and Workshop, drew members of the academic community, students, and invited guests. Proceedings began with the arrival of dignitaries, a formal procession, the National Anthem, and opening prayers.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Strategy, Innovation and Service Delivery, Prof. Helen Afang Andow, described inaugural lectures as vital academic traditions that reinforce KASU’s commitment to integrity, excellence, and community-focused scholarship. She said the lecture’s theme underscored the intersection between scientific theory and practical solutions to societal challenges.
Prof. Andow praised Prof. Afuwaz for his contributions to geophysical research, noting that his work aligns with the university’s mission of advancing teaching, research, and community service. She congratulated him on behalf of the Management, Senate, Provosts, staff, and students.

Earlier, Prof. Dogara Mato presented the citation of the inaugural lecturer, detailing Prof. Afuwaz’s academic qualifications, professional journey, and research footprint. A native of Kagoro in Kaduna State, Prof. Afuwaz earned his BSc, MSc, and PhD in Applied Geophysics from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU). He has published over 50 scientific papers and supervised several undergraduate and postgraduate theses. He has also served as Head of Department and Dean of Faculty.
In his presentation, Prof. Afuwaz explored the Earth’s structure, the application of geophysical principles, and the relevance of scientific laws—such as Ohm’s Law and Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation—in natural resource exploration. He highlighted how these principles assist in environmental monitoring, sustainable resource management, and national development planning.

At the end of the lecture, Prof. Andow, representing the Chairman of the Inaugural Committee, presented a plaque and certificate to Prof. Afuwaz in recognition of his scholarly achievements.
She also delivered the Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, guests, staff, students, and the organising committee for their contributions to the successful event.

The ceremony concluded with remarks from the Chairman of the Occasion, Prof. Bala Dogo, followed by a closing prayer and a recessional march.
The lecture reaffirmed Kaduna State University’s dedication to fostering academic inquiry and promoting research that supports Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
