Practical Applications: Tools and Software for AI-Driven Literature Reviews

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences held the seventh edition of its monthly Seminar Series on 1st December 2025.

Umar Mukthar Danmusa, a lecturer from the Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, led the seminar, presenting AI as a tool for augmenting human intelligence in research. He highlighted the challenges of traditional literature reviews, such as their slow and labor-intensive nature, and how AI can facilitate faster searches and syntheses.

The session also covered journal policies related to AI, noting that AI cannot be an author, disclosure is often required, and content generation remains restricted. The importance of verifying AI-generated citations was emphasized due to risks like hallucination and biased training data.

Participants explored tools such as Consensus for question answering, Perplexity for cited responses, Scispace for paper analysis, generative AI assistants for drafting, and Zotero for reference management. A practical session followed, allowing attendees to engage directly with these tools, showcasing how AI can responsibly enhance literature reviews while upholding academic integrity.
