KASU Marks World Diabetes Day with Free Health Screening for 100 Participants

In commemoration of the 2025 World Diabetes Day, the Association of Muslim Health Students (AMHS), in collaboration with the College of Medicine, the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, and the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital (BDTH- KASU), organised a comprehensive health screening exercise at the IT Park, Kaduna State University (KASU) on Wednesday, 19th November 2025.

This year’s theme, “Diabetes and Well-Being,” highlights the importance of placing overall wellness at the centre of diabetes care. The screening exercise was designed to promote early detection of diabetes and hypertension, two major non-communicable diseases that continue to rise globally and within the Nigerian population.

A total of 100 individuals comprising students, staff, and community members were screened during the event. Participants underwent Blood Pressure (BP) checks, Random Blood Sugar tests, Body Mass Index (BMI) calculations, and received tailored health education on lifestyle modification, diet, exercise, and preventive care.

A majority of the participants presented with normal blood pressure and blood sugar levels, while others fell within pre-hypertensive, pre-diabetic, or diabetic ranges. Those with significantly abnormal readings were counselled and given prompt referrals for further medical evaluation.

Representatives of the organising bodies emphasised the importance of continuous awareness, noting that early screening and lifestyle adjustments remain some of the most effective strategies in preventing complications of diabetes and hypertension. They further highlighted the need for sustained collaboration among health institutions to improve community health outcomes.

The Association of Muslim Health Students and its partners expressed appreciation to all volunteers, faculty members, and healthcare personnel from Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital who contributed to the success of the programme. They reaffirmed their commitment to championing initiatives that promote health, well-being, and disease prevention within and beyond the university campus.

The event concluded with participants expressing gratitude for the free and accessible health checks, describing the exercise as timely, impactful, and highly informative. As World Diabetes Day continues to serve as a global call to action, the KASU health community remains committed to fostering a healthier population through continuous education, advocacy, and early detection
