Call for Participation in Mapping Competition Tell the Story Behind Your Map

In her welcome address, Dr. Asmau Ahmed Mukhtar, Head of the Department of Geography, celebrated 20 years of the Department of Geography at Kaduna State University and the ongoing tradition of World GIS Day. She emphasized GIS as a transformative tool in research and reaffirmed the department’s commitment to programs like the Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s in GIS. The mapping competition highlighted students’ creativity in addressing real-world problems through innovative mapping solutions.

Dr. Bonet Rikichi Atiyong, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Earth Science and Sustainability Studies, discussed advancements in GIS technology compared to earlier “analog” methods. He remarked on the potential of GIS for real-time monitoring while addressing its underutilization in Nigeria, stressing the need for better integration into decision-making processes.

The program featured a panel discussion titled “The Future of GIS in Kaduna State: Challenges and Opportunities.” Here, experts shared insights on how GIS can drive development across various sectors in the state, enriching the overall dialogue on the subject.

Mr. Avila Emmanuel Arimor, Principal Manager of Spectrum Administration at the Nigerian Communications Commission, delivered a presentation about the application of GIS in telecom regulation. He highlighted GIS’s importance for managing spectrum allocation, monitoring network coverage, and improving service quality, underscoring its critical role in enhancing communication services across Nigeria.

Five students from Kaduna State University and other higher institutions showcased innovative solutions in a mapping competition which held at the event. Hikmat Zakari from Kaduna Polytechnic won a cash price of N70000 for emerging as winner of the competition

Prof. Bala Dogo delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all attendees for their participation in the World GIS Day and celebrating the Department @20 Workshop. He thanked the students, educators, and speakers for their contributions and emphasized the importance of collaboration in advancing GIS education. Prof. Dogo encouraged students to explore the potential of geographic information systems and looked forward to future engagements.
