COLLEGE OF ALLIED HEALTH AND PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES HOLDS 6TH MONTHLY SEMINAR SERIES ON AI APPLICATIONS IN HEALTHCARE RESEARCH

The College of Allied Health and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kaduna State University (KASU), successfully held the 6th edition of its Monthly Seminar Series on 3rd November 20025. The seminar was themed “Application of AI to Metagenomic and Microbiome Research: A Driving Tool to Improve Healthcare Delivery.”

The event provided an engaging platform for academic discussions on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing biomedical research and improving healthcare delivery systems.

The seminar was chaired by Assoc. Prof. A. A. Jimoh, Chairman, Seminar Committee, who gave the opening remarks and welcomed all participants. He emphasized the importance of fostering continuous academic engagement to promote innovative healthcare research through modern technology.

The Provost of the College, Prof. J. A. Onaolapo, who served as the Chief Host, warmly welcomed attendees and commended the choice of topic, describing it as timely and significant to the advancement of modern healthcare. Prof. Onaolapo expressed his enthusiasm for the discussion and demonstrated active participation during the interactive session, being the first to pose a question to the presenter during the Q&A segment.

The presentation was delivered by Mr. Audu Haruna Jimoh, an M.Sc. candidate in Pharmaceutical Microbiology, from the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, KASU.

In his lecture, Mr. Jimoh provided a comprehensive overview of Artificial Intelligence, explaining its fundamental concepts, components, and applications in metagenomic and microbiome research. He elaborated on AI elements such as machine learning, deep learning, and data analysis, relating them to research techniques including DNA sequencing, sequence analysis, and genomic reconstruction.

He also highlighted the use of AI tools such as BioGPT, ChatGPT, Elicit, and Claude AI in scientific research, while discussing the benefits and challenges of AI integration, particularly issues relating to agentic misalignment and data ethics in biomedical studies.

An engaging question-and-answer session followed, where participants shared insights, asked critical questions, and discussed potential collaborations.

In his closing remarks, Assoc. Prof. A. A. Jimoh expressed gratitude to the presenter and participants for their contributions, emphasizing that the knowledge gained would further enhance the application of AI in health-related research. He commended the active engagement of the audience and encouraged continuous academic interaction among staff and students.

The seminar reaffirmed the College’s and KASU’s collective commitment to fostering cutting-edge research, innovation, and scientific excellence for improved healthcare delivery.
