Committee on Bioinformatics Hosts Seminar on Molecular Dynamics

The Committee on Bioinformatics, Kaduna State University (KASU), in collaboration with the Department of Biochemistry and the Institute of Science, Technology and Management Studies (ISTMS), held a seminar on October 8, 2025, at the Bioinformatics Laboratory, KASU.

The seminar featured Dr. Jonathan Maianguwa from the Department of Microbiology as the guest speaker where he presented a paper titled:

“Molecular Dynamic Simulations: Understanding the Non-Aqueous Functional Stability of Protein Dynamics”

In his presentation, Dr. Maianguwa introduced the concept of Molecular Dynamics (MD), explaining that its main purpose in non-aqueous systems is to understand solvation and desolation processes and reaction mechanisms in organic media. He highlighted the relevance of MD simulations in industrial biocatalysis, protein preservation, and formulation, as well as in gaining a fundamental understanding of hydration and stability.

He also discussed key aspects of MD simulation settings, including RMSD and SASA over time, solvent distribution around proteins, backbone hydrogen bonds, and DCCM landscapes. The presentation concluded with a practical case study and key applications and conclusions in the field.

The presentation was followed by an interactive questions and answers session with the participants

Professor Timothy Bulus commended the presentation, describing it as “very interesting,” and thanked Dr. Maianguwa for his insightful contribution while encouraging students to remain curious and active in research.

Dr. Esther Gani, Librarian, College of Continuing Education, expressed her appreciation to the speaker and participants. She encouraged students to make good use of available academic resources and continue to attend such educational seminars for broader exposure.

Students in attendance also shared positive feedback and appreciated the opportunity to learn about molecular dynamics in real-world applications.

Closing the seminar, Dr. Stephen A. James thanked the speaker and participants, emphasizing the importance of inter-departmental collaboration and announcing that more seminar sessions would be organized in the future.
