Empowering Change: KASU and the Nigerian Bar Association Host Public Lecture on Social Crime and Drug Abuse

The Kaduna State Students Union, KASU chapter, orgnised a public lecture titled “Tackling Social Crime and Drug Abuse: Safeguarding Human Rights and Building a Safer Society” on September 30, 2025. 

The event commenced with a welcome address from the President of the Kaduna State Students Union, Comr. Naziru Ishaq. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the honoured guests for their attendance, emphasising the importance of addressing social crime, drug abuse, and human rights. He encouraged the audience to engage actively with the discussions, stating, “Let us leave this hall better informed and inspired to make positive changes in our communities.”

The University’s Registrar, Samira Balarabe Esq., delivered a goodwill message to the attendees. She highlighted the significance of knowledge as a transformative power, stating, “Wherever there is knowledge, there is light.” She urged students to share the insights gained from the lecture, reinforcing the idea that one person’s knowledge can ripple through the community.

Chief Superintendent Nana Fatima Abubakar, representing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), addressed the pervasive nature of corruption. She stressed that combating corruption is a shared responsibility and encouraged students to engage in public enlightenment programs. “Together, the youth can help build a better Nigeria,” she affirmed.

Muhammad Shuaibu, Assistant Commander of Narcotics at the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), presented on the stages of drug abuse. He described the progression from experimentation to addiction, warning of the dire consequences that can ensue. “A fulfilling and healthy life is possible without drugs,” he urged, advocating for informed choices that lead to brighter futures.

The event concluded with a lively question-and-answer session, fostering engagement between speakers and attendees.

In his closing remarks, Benjamin Sheyi, P.R.O of the Kaduna State Students Union, expressed gratitude to all participants. He reflected on the session’s insights and encouraged attendees to carry the lessons learned into their daily lives. “May the lessons we have shared guide us toward building a safer, better society,” he stated.
