KASU, Biochemical Society UK Host Seminar on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Science

Kaduna State University (KASU), in partnership with the Biochemical Society UK and Equity Lighthouse, held a landmark seminar on Monday, 29th January 2025, themed “Design and Delivery.” The event, which marked the first of its kind, brought together academics and community members to spotlight equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in science.

Pharm. Kenneth Bitrus David, CEO of the Phamfluence Education Advancement Network (PEAN), gave the opening remarks and introduced the maiden edition of Science Diversity Magazine, an initiative showcasing global EDI champions. He acknowledged key figures such as Sallay Arif, Leila Neshat Mokadem, Jethro Aaron Akaito, Obed Dodo, and Robin Craig, all recognized for their work in promoting inclusion in science.

He also appreciated KASU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa, and highlighted the Biochemical Society’s long-standing contributions since 1911. Kenneth outlined the Society’s membership options, benefits, and significant discounts available to individuals in underdeveloped countries. Membership is open to students, graduates, professionals, and even non-biomedical fields like pharmacy. A follow-up seminar is scheduled for November 2025.

Dr. Leila Neshat Mokadem, CEO of Equity Lighthouse, and a specialist in Health Equity, delivered a keynote on “Effective Strategies for Impactful EDI Initiatives.” She emphasized inclusive curriculum development, global citizenship, and alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
An interactive session followed, led by Pharm. Kenneth, encouraging deeper dialogue on the topic.

In his closing remarks, he thanked virtual attendees, including Prof. Awal Abdulsallam, and stressed the importance of inclusive education.
The seminar marked a strong step forward in championing EDI in science and academia.
