As part of its Pad-A-Girl Initiative, the Kaduna State Government, on Thursday 25th December, distributed free sanitary pads to female students of Kaduna State University. The initiative, which flagged off on the 18th September, is aimed at distributing sanitary pads to female students of tertiary institutions across the State.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi I Musa emphasized the significance of the day, noting that KASU has one of the largest populations of female students among Nigerian universities and women also hold key leadership roles in the institution’s management. He highlighted the importance of inclusiveness, gender balance, and women’s empowerment within the university.
He praised Governor Uba Sani for initiating the menstrual hygiene program, stressing that open discussions on menstrual health are crucial to breaking cultural silence and supporting young women. He also commended the university staff, lecturers, and students for their contributions to KASU’s success, urging discipline and unity during the pad distribution exercise.

In his remarks, the University’s Medical Director, Dr. Umar Muhammad explained the background of the initiative, recalling how the Vice Chancellor raised concern about the challenges girls face during menstruation, especially during exams. He noted that the Pad-A-Girl program not only distributes pads but also educates students on menstrual hygiene.

He gave a practical guide to menstrual health, emphasizing cleanliness, use of safe products, proper disposal, and healthy clothing. He also explained how to manage cramps and cautioned against harmful practices like using rags or vaginal douching. His central message was that menstrual hygiene protects health, dignity, and performance, and should be prioritized in KASU.
Dr. Raymond celebrated the official launch of the Pad-A-Girl Initiative across tertiary institutions in Kaduna State, noting that it will benefit over 40,000 female students. He praised Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to education and welfare, alongside his co-coordinator, Sumayya Mohamed Sani, who represents the potential of the younger generation.

He highlighted Governor Uba Sani’s broader achievements, including tuition fee reductions and establishment of world-class vocational centers. The initiative, he concluded, symbolises a future where no girl is left behind due to menstruation, combining dignity with access to education.
Two Awards were presented to His Excellency, Gov Uba Sani in recognition leadership and his efforts towards the development of the University, education in Kaduna State and in particular, girl child education.

The Co-ordianators, Sumayya Muhammad Sani and Dr. Abu Raymond were also recipients of an award each recognizing their outstanding contributions to the initiative.
