KASU HOLDS INAUGURAL PRE-SIWES COUNSELLING LECTURE FOR BIOCHEMISTRY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY STUDENTS

In a pioneering move to enhance students’ readiness for industrial training, the Directorate of Laboratory Services, in collaboration with the Department of Biochemistry, Kaduna State University (KASU), organized a Pre-SIWES Counselling Lecture for 300-level students of Biochemistry and Biotechnology. The event took place on Wednesday, 16th July 2025, at the Science Lecture Theatre 1, Main Campus.

In her welcome address, Dr. Maimuna Zubairu, Head of the Department of Biochemistry, underscored the significance of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) as a bridge between theoretical learning and practical experience. She urged the students to uphold discipline, integrity, and professionalism during their placements, reminding them that they are ambassadors of both the university and their respective disciplines.

Dr. Zubairu emphasized the importance of punctuality, active participation, and respectful conduct within their host organizations.

Speaking further, the Director of Laboratory Services, Professor Timothy Bulus, described the event as a “first of its kind in the university,” aimed at helping students maximize the opportunities presented by SIWES. He encouraged students to take the initiative seriously and to prepare thoroughly, stating that the experience could shape their future careers.

The main lecture was delivered by Malama Rabiatu Idris Abubakar, who provided a comprehensive guide on how students can effectively navigate their SIWES. She advised students to:

Secure placements in reputable laboratories or industries relevant to their fields;

Abide by the rules and regulations of their host organizations;

Apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings;

Understand and demonstrate professional ethics, effective workplace behavior, and communication skills;

Build positive relationships with colleagues and supervisors.

Malama Rabiatu also highlighted the numerous benefits of SIWES, including career clarity, a foundation for future research, and a deeper understanding of scientific principles. She urged students to begin seeking placements early, be adaptable, observe closely, ask questions when in doubt, and maintain an eagerness to learn.

In her concluding remarks, she emphasized the need for students to remain proactive and professional, be time-conscious, and uphold high standards of hygiene, safety, and ethical conduct throughout their industrial training.

The event concluded with an interactive session, where students posed questions about their upcoming SIWES journey. The resource persons responded to their concerns, capping off a highly engaging and impactful session.
