Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology is an integral part of pharmaceutical sciences. It involves research and development for manufacturing of various anti-tumors and antimicrobial agents. Pharmaceutical microbiology involves ensuring microbial quality of drug dosage delivery system with the use of aseptic techniques to avoid microbial contamination, sterilization processes to eliminate microorganisms and preservation of pharmaceutical products to prevent microbial spoilage during the period of storage and use.
It also involves the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals from microorganisms either directly or with the use of some products produced by them while Biotechnology aspect exposes the students to the knowledge of using microbial genetics, tissue culture, living cells or cell enzymes to make a defined product.
The Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology is one of the departments currently situated in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in this great university. The department came into being at the beginning of 2018/2019 session with four tenure academic staff and one non-academic staff. Today, the department is blessed with two (2) visiting Professors, four (4) Senior Lecturers (one sabbatical, one visiting and two tenure), one (1) Lecturer I and one (1) Lecturer II. The department also has a non-academic staff.
