Our department is dedicated to advancing knowledge and promoting sustainable practices in animal science. We focus on three core areas:

Animal Production for Sustainable Agriculture: We explore innovative techniques to optimize animal production systems, ensuring sustainable and ethical agricultural practices.
Conservation and Welfare of Animal Populations: Our research prioritizes the preservation of biodiversity and the welfare of animals in natural and managed environments.
Foundations of Animal Science: We delve into the core principles and theories of animal biology, nutrition, genetics, and health to drive innovation and inform sustainable practices.

About the Department

Shaping Sustainable Solutions

The Department started off the same year with the Faculty of Agriculture in the 2012/2013 academic session with about 50 students. Through the years the Department has had a good number of sound Academics that were here on Tenure, Sabbatical and on Contract bases who serviced the Department with their seasoned knowledge and experience.

The Department was fully accredited by the NUC in 2015 with its first set of students graduating in 2017. The pioneer Head of the Department was Mr. Mohammed S. Afaka who served from 2014 to 2016, after which late Dr. Cyprian Alphonsus served as the Head of the Department from 2016 to 2018. Dr. Rahab S. Makama continued as the Head of Department from 2019 to 2021, she then handed over to the present Head of Department Dr. Bala. R. Gandi who was appointed in 2022 to date as Head of the Department.

Some notable achievements of the Department is that it has been able to attract various research grants, TETfund sponsored researches and have written and published research papers, with over 50 journals and conferences in the past 5 years.

The Department has gained recognition and membership by its professional body National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) were most staff have been inducted at various levels like Registered Animal Scientist to Associate Animal Scientist.

The Department has graduated a good number of first class students over the years who have been able to compete favourably at other national and international institutions across the country.
