History

Here is a history of Kaduna State University (KASU).

University Vision: To become a university of a world-class standard with excellence in applied sciences and sustainability studies.

University Mission: To provide an all-round university education of the highest standard for the development of the individual and the state, while inculcating the spirit of love, tolerance, understanding and unity in the state in particular and the country in general.

The Kaduna State University was established under the Kaduna State Law No.3 promulgated on 21st May 2004. The promulgation followed the need to boost higher education in the northern and southern parts of the state. Consequently, two campuses were approved: one in Kaduna and the other in Kafanchan. Academic activities commenced in the 2005/2006 academic session at the Kaduna campus with 3 faculties, 17 academic departments, 19 undergraduate programmes and the College of Basic Studies.

The then Executive Governor of Kaduna State and Visitor to the University, Alhaji (Dr) Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, appointed the Chief of Moro’a, His Highness, Malam Tagwai Sambo, as Chancellor. Professor Idris Abdulkadir is the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council. He was succeeded by Alh. Abubakar Ladan, then followed by Prof. Shehu Usman Abdullahi.

Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo was appointed the first Vice-Chancellor from May 2004 to 31st December 2004.

Professor Aminu S. Mikailu took over as second Vice-Chancellor from 1st January 2005 to 31st December 2006.

Professor Ezzeldin Muktar Abdurahman took over as the third Vice-Chancellor from 1st January 2007 to 31st December 2011.

Professor William Barnabas Quirix was appointed as the fourth Vice-Chancellor on 24th January 2012.

Subsequently, Professor Ado-Baba Ahmed was appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor from 16th September 2016 until 24th January 2017.

Professor Muhammad Tanko took Office as the fifth Vice-Chancellor from January 2017 to January 2022.

Professor Yohanna Tella acted as Vice-Chancellor from January to June 2022.

Professor Abdullahi Musa Ashafa assumed the role of Acting Vice-Chancellor from 22 June 2022 until the appointment of Professor Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa by Governor Malam Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai as the current Vice-Chancellor on the 14th of November 2022.

His Royal Highness, Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II is the current Chancellor, while Malam (Dr) Husaini Adamu Dikko is the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council.

KASU boasts of high-profile academics engaged in impactful research and collaborations. It is recognized for having one of the best Medical Colleges and being the 2nd most sought-after state-owned University. With 6 Campuses, 8 Colleges, 3 Institutes, 4 Research Centers, 2 Schools, 15 Faculties, 59 Undergraduate Programs, 113 Postgraduate Programs, and 15 Part-Time Programs, KASU offers a diverse academic landscape.

Currently, the university has a staff strength of 1,863 (comprising 964 Academic Staff and 899 Non-Academic Staff) with a notable 30% female staff representation and 169 Professors. KASU boasts well over 25,000 enrolled students, with a commendable 46% female student representation. To date, over 70,000 students have graduated from KASU. Additionally, there are 74 student unions and 32 Affiliated Schools associated with the university.

Under the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, the university remains steadfast in its commitment to excellence, innovation, and service, with a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, community engagement, Infrastructure development, and student-centred.
