About the Department

Shaping Sustainable Solutions

The Department of Building Kaduna State University was founded in 2019 under the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. The B.Sc. Building programme began at the start of the 2019/2020 academic session. The department commenced with Prof. Nghai Ezekiel Suleman as its pioneer Head of Department and four academic staff members.

The establishment of the department was part of the university’s broader expansion aimed at addressing national developmental needs through quality education in the built environment disciplines. The department has since been committed to producing graduates with strong technical, managerial, and professional competence in building sciences, capable of competing locally and internationally.

Mission

To provide all round university education of highest standard for the development of individual and the state, while inculcating the spirit of love, tolerance, understanding and unity in the state in particular and in the country at large.

To become a Department of world class standard with excellence in applied sciences and sustainability Studies.

To provide courses of instruction and other facilities for the pursuit learning in all its branches, and to make those facilities available on proper terms to such persons as are equipped to benefit from them.

Research

The research activities in the Department of Building are geared towards advancing knowledge, technology, and management practices in the construction industry. The department equips students and staff with skills to carry out research that addresses contemporary challenges in building construction, operation, maintenance, and deconstruction.

Research areas include but are not limited to:

  • Construction technology and methods

  • Building materials science and innovation

  • Construction project management techniques

  • Facilities management and maintenance

  • Sustainable and eco-friendly building practices

  • Building services such as electrical, water, mechanical systems

  • Structural analysis and design

  • Building information modeling (BIM) and intelligent building systems

  • Cost estimation and construction economics

The department trains students in research methods including proposal writing, data collection, analysis, and reporting, thereby preparing them to contribute scholarly work that supports the building profession and industry.

CONFERENCE AND WORKSHOPS

To continually enhance academic excellence and professional competence, the Department of Building actively encourages its academic staff and students to participate in conferences, seminars, and workshops both locally and internationally. These events serve as platforms for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and exposure to the latest technologies and practices in the building and construction industry.

The department organizes and participates in various capacity-building workshops focusing on:

  • Construction project management and innovation

  • Research methodology and academic writing for postgraduate students

  • Health, safety, and environmental management in construction

Industrial training and the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) further complement these efforts by providing practical exposure to real-world construction environments.

THE LIBRARY

The guiding philosophy of the Building and Construction Library, Kaduna State University is to provide access to vast resources comprising:

  • Over 5,000 volumes of building and construction books
  • More than 10 recognized international journals (e.g. Journal of Building Engineering, Construction Management and Economics)
  • Online databases (Science Direct, JSTOR, ASCE Library)
  • Thousands of E-books and research papers on building science and construction management
  • Convenient study spaces and ICT facilities
