In a tribute to the late Alhaji Mamman Shata, renowned for his profound impact on Hausa literature and music, the Department of Nigerian Languages and Linguistics at Kaduna State University, in collaboration with the Open Arts Foundation, hosted a memorable event titled the “Shata Commemorative Day Celebration.”
Dignitaries included the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Strategy, Innovation and Service Delivery, Prof. Helen Afang Andow, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, the Registrar, Hajiya Samira Balarabe, Deputy Provost of the College of Arts, Education and Law, Dr Ibrahim Shehu and the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof. Audee T. Giwa all graced the occasion with their presence. They delivered keynote addresses and expressed gratitude on behalf of the university community.
The event, curated by Dr Alamuna Nuhu and Salma Ja’eh of the Open Arts Foundation, attracted a diverse audience of esteemed Nigerians, devoted admirers of Shata’s work, and the late Shata’s wife, Hajiya Yalwa, accompanied by supporters.
Highlighting the celebration was a live concert by Alhaji Sanusi Mamman Shata himself, son of the legendary figure, who captivated participants with renditions of his father’s iconic songs.
A panel discussion titled “The Icon that was Shata” featured insights from Dr Lawal Ɗankwari from FCE Zaria, Prof. Audee T. Giwa from KASU, and Prof. Ibrahim Malumfashi of Nigerian Languages and Linguistics at Kaduna State University. They examined Alhaji Mamman Shata’s profound contributions to Hausa literature and music, stressing his role in cultural development.
The “Shata Commemorative Day Celebration” not only honoured the legacy of Alhaji Mamman Shata but also underscored his enduring influence on Nigerian arts and culture.
