STRUCTURE OF THE DIRECTORATE OF ACADEMIC PLANNING
The Directorate of Academic Planning has three units as follows:
- Quality Assurance Unit
- Programme Planning Unit
- Resource Planning Unit
QUALITY ASSURANCE UNIT
The Quality Assurance Unit has, among others, the following specific functions.
- Coordination of accreditation and resource assessment visits to the University by the National Universities Commission as well as serving as secretariat of the Central Accreditation Committee.
- Coordination of accreditation and advisory visits to the University by professional bodies.
- Coordination of registration exercise of students as well as serving as secretariat of the Verification Committee of newly admitted students.
- Provision of requirements for student admission and graduation, minimum and maximum credit load for students, minimum work load for staff, staff to student ratios for various disciplines, staff mix, etc as stipulated in the NUC Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards.
- Scrutiny of staff list vis-à-vis lecture time table to determine requirements for sabbatical/visiting/part-time lecturers before the commencement of every academic session to ensure equitable distribution of workload among staff.
- Liaison with faculties to ensure compliance with academic calendar, lecture time-table and examination time-table in every semester.
- Monitor and evaluate, on annual basis, all programmes in the university with a focus on such areas as teacher/student ratio, quality and mix of academic staff, students’ performance in examinations, external examiners’ reports, available physical facilities and other issues pertinent to quality assurance.
- Monitoring and maintaining academic standards through periodic curriculum review in line with the provisions of Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards and the needs of the community and the nation at large.
- Ensuring and maintaining high standards by instituting course and teacher evaluative criteria and guidelines such as peer assessment, annual performance assessment and student opinion survey.
- Participation in orientation for staff and students at department, faculty and university level to enlighten them on examinations regulations and other dos and don’ts relating to academic matters.
- Facilitate the emergence and development of centre of excellence amongst existing programmes through the promotion of best practices in teaching, learning and research.
- Coordination of academic monitoring activities to advice on academic matters, highlighting areas that require remedial measures, as well as serving as secretariat of the University Academic Monitoring Committee.
- Compilation and recommendation of applications for change of course by fresh and returning students to the Senate.
- Custodian of students’ files and ensuring their orderly arrangement and safe keeping.
- Any other function that may be assigned to the Unit by the Directorate.
PROGRAMME PLANNING UNIT
The Programme Planning Unit has, among others, the following specific functions.
- Liaison with faculties and departments for the initiation and establishment of new programmes, departments, faculties and other academic units.
- Drawing up and monitoring implementation of the University academic calendar.
- Preparation, implementation and review of the University’s academic brief for a systematic development of the University.
- Liaison with departments and faculties for the development and review of curricula of courses in line with the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standard of the National Universities Commission.
- Collection and compilation of list of academic programmes, departments and faculties as well as degrees awarded by the University for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
- Preparation, implementation and review of the University’s strategic plan for a sustained development of the University.
- Continuous evaluation of academic programmes, rationalization of courses and merger/demerger of academic units.
- Liaison with Student Affairs Division for drawing up and review of the University Students Handbook.
- Provision of necessary guidance to the academic departments and Management Information System Unit of the ICT Directorate on course credit system with its attendant administrative issues.
- Liaison with MIS Unit of the ICT Directorate for the compilation of matriculation list for order of proceedings at the beginning of every academic session.
- Liaison with Academic Affairs Unit of the Registry and MIS Unit of the ICT Directorate for the compilation of convocation list for order of proceedings at the end of every academic session.
- Any other function that may be assigned to the Unit by the Directorate.
RESOURCE PLANNING UNIT
The Resource Planning Unit has, among others, the following specific functions.
- Compilation of the University Annual Report at the end of every academic session to provide firsthand information on the University to the university community and the general public.
- Collection, collation and analysis of statistical information on staff and students for each programme, department, faculty and other non-academic units for planning purposes and management decisions.
- Participation in the University Development or Rolling Plans, annual budget and other special reports.
- Compilation of the University Statistical Digest in every academic session.
- Comprehensive analysis of examination results for the determination of passes and failure rates for undergraduate and postgraduate students at the end of every semester for attention of the Senate.
- Analysis of evaluation reports on lecturers by students at the end of every academic session for attention of the Management.
- Dissemination of information on request to organizations and individuals that are concern with research, educational planning, economic planning, manpower planning, etc through appropriate channel.
- Projection and allocation of student enrolment to various programmes runs in the university based on the University’s admission quota and other stipulated guidelines by NUC as well as resource availability of each programme at the beginning of every academic session.
- Determination of staff needs of departments and units in line with the NUC guidelines on staff/student ratio, staff mix, staff qualification and staff workload for attention of the Management.
- Liaison with Directorate of Physical Planning and Development on space requirements for departments, faculties and other units in terms of classrooms, lecture halls/theatres, library, laboratories, workshops, studios and clinics based on the student headcount and full-time equivalent.
- Vetting of claim forms for payment of part-time lecturers for recommendation to the Vice Chancellor.
- Any other function that may be assigned to the Unit by the Directorate.
